Imagine...fab Lasers Concert

WHEN the Beatles set the world on fire in the 1960s, their funkiest props were some strange haircuts and snappy clothes.

The music spoke for itself and performing meant getting up on stage and simply playing the instruments.

There were no freaky light shows, no multiple costume changes and no choreographed dance routines backed by hordes of women in skimpy, glittering costumes.

And it certainly wasn't about lasers.

Welcome to the 21st century.

While the Beatles' music still doesn't need any adornment, technological progress and the human thirst for all things better, brighter and more elaborate has given rise to a contemporary interpretation of the Fab Four's music.

The Wollongong Science Centre is running the Beatles Laser Concert, a masterful application of laser artistry to the rhythms of the Beatles music.

Following its immensely successful Pink Floyd season, the Beatles Laser Concert is a sensory experience that is as fascinating as it is unusual.

As the songs play, a laser beam creates pictures on the darkened ceiling, interpreting the lyrics and mood of the music.

Sometimes the laser creates pictures reflecting individual words or scenes described in the lyrics. At other times they are abstract drawings that reflect the emotion of the song or the raw beat of the music.

It's hard to imagine until you've seen the show for yourself but you'd better book quickly. There are only limited seats available at each performance and they sell out very quickly.

If you like to experiment with new and unusual forms of entertainment, don't miss one of these shows.

The Beatles Laser Concert is screening as part of the Viva La Gong festival with shows tonight and March 30. Tickets are $9 adults and $7 concession and can be booked by phoning 42865000.
